For many years we were taught that writing in a book is rude. Then we met readers whose copies are covered in pencil, and they were not rude at all. They were reading closely.

Why a pencil, and not a pen

Pencil can be changed. You can underline a line today and rub it out next year when you disagree with yourself. That freedom is exactly why it works: you stop worrying and start noticing.

Four small marks

  • A line beside a passage: "I liked this."
  • A question mark: "I do not understand yet."
  • An exclamation mark: "Wait, really?"
  • A tiny dot in the margin: "Come back to this."

That is enough. You do not need a system. Each mark is a small conversation with the writer.

A rule for borrowed books

Never write in a library book, and ask before you write in a friend's. For those, keep a few slips of paper or a small notebook beside you instead. A pencil mark is for your own shelf.

What you gain

Years later you open an old paperback and find your younger self in the margins, someone who was curious about the same things you still are. That is a quiet kind of treasure.

Tonight, try it with one chapter. Put the tea beside you, sharpen the pencil and read slowly.
